"To be playful is not to be trivial or frivolous , or to act as though nothing of consequence will happen. On the contrary, when we are playful with each other we relate as free persons, and the relationship is open to surprise; everything that happens is of consequence. It is, in fact, seriousness that closes itself to consequence, for seriousness is a dread of the unpredictable outcome of open possibility. To be serious is to press for a specified conclusion. To be playful is to allow for possibility whatever the cost to oneself"
I started reading this book because @future infinitive on tiktok was posting about theories on the origins of consciousness and dropped that they had a podcast on youtube called "the multiverse school" and all the episodes so far are about game theory through the lens of this book. Still not exactly sure how I feel about it? It has some really amazing quotes and insight but I'm not sure if it holds up as a framework for understanding reality like it claims. The writing can be confusing.
"My soul, where are you? Do you hear me? I speak, I call you-are you there? I have returned, I am here again. I have shaken the dust of all the lands from my feet, and I have come to you, I am with you. After long years of long wandering, I have come to you again. Should I tell you everything I have seen, experienced, and drunk in? Or do you not want to hear about all the noise of life and the world? But one thing you must know: the one thing I have learned is that one must live this life. This life is the way, the long sought-after way to the unfathomable, which we call divine."
